Tucupita Marcano Out for Season with Torn ACL

Pirates Infielder to Undergo Surgery

Pittsburgh, PA - August 10, 2023

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed infielder Tucupita Marcano on the 60-day injured list with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The 23-year-old sustained the injury in the fifth inning of the Pirates' 8-4 win over the Padres in San Diego on Monday night.

Marcano left the game after attempting to field a ground ball and was diagnosed with a ligamentous injury in his right knee. An MRI exam later confirmed the torn ACL, and Marcano underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair the ligament.

The recovery time for an ACL injury is typically six to nine months, which means that Marcano is likely out for the rest of the 2023 season. The Pirates have not yet announced who will replace Marcano on the roster, but they could call up a player from their minor league system or sign a free agent.

Marcano, who was acquired by the Pirates in a trade with the New York Yankees in March 2022, has been a valuable player for the Pirates this season. He is hitting .275 with three home runs and 20 RBIs in 65 games played.

The Pirates are currently in last place in the NL Central standings with a record of 47-72. They will host the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series starting on Friday night.
